If you’re thinking of visiting a Christmas market in Germany this year, I can highly recommend the fabulous market in my hometown of Düsseldorf. Direct flights are currently available from Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, London-Heathrow, London-City, Manchester and Newcastle. An added bonus is that Düsseldorf Airport is only a 15-minute taxi ride away from the city centre. Düsseldorf is also a great city for shopping and you’ll find a good variety of restaurants, cafés and bars dotted around the markets.
Do you know where the longest bar in the world is?
Düsseldorf’s old town (Altstadt) has around 300 bars and is known as the longest bar in the world.
If you like beer, why not try some Altbier? This dark beer has a slightly bitter but fruity taste at the end and is made by using a top-fermenting yeast, rather than the bottom fermentation used when making lager. Don’t be surprised if you receive another glass of beer without even ordering it! It’s normal practice, especially in the many traditional breweries around the city. I did the Altbier Safari Brewery Tour in Düsseldorf last year. I spent a fun-filled couple of hours visiting some of the breweries and sampling a wide range of different beers. Read more in my blog:

There are around six Christmas markets spread around Düsseldorf’s city centre – all within walking distance.

Closed on 25th November (Sunday) for Remembrance Day of the Dead
24th December (Christmas Eve) 10am – 2pm
Closed on 25th December (Christmas Day)
The Old Town (Altstadt)
Town Hall Square
The Christmas market situated on Town Hall Square, with its monument of Jan Wellem, provides the perfect location for creating a festive atmosphere. The hand-carved manger is positioned in front of the picturesque façade next to a beautifully decorated Christmas tree. A good variety of shops, restaurants, cafés and bars are dotted around the square and the beautiful Rhine promenade is just a couple of minutes’ walk away.
Many visitors say that Angel Market on Heinrich-Heine Square is one of the prettiest Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf. This small market is decorated with golden angels and lots of lights – creating the perfect festive mood.
Flinger Straße Christmas Market
Flinger Straße is in the old town and has a great selection of stalls lining the street. A gigantic pyramid-shaped stall serving mulled wine can be found at the entrance to Flinger Straße – perfect for meeting friends for a glass of festive mulled wine!
Schadowplatz Christmas Market
Schadowplatz Christmas market has a more modern feel about it, without the usual Christmas glitz. The Christmas winter village has been newly designed using light wood – giving it a much more Scandinavian feel. It’s set up in between the brand new architectural development on Schadowplatz with plenty of shopping opportunities around.
Schadowstraße Christmas Market
Once you’ve reached Schadowplatz, you can then continue to the Christmas market stalls along Schadowstraße. Here you’ll find more hand-crafted products made from glass, wood, leather or other materials. This street is also home to stores like Primark, C & A and the department store, Karstadt.
Starlet Christmas Market
This lovely, off-the-beaten track, Christmas market is well-worth a visit and is just around the corner from Angel Market. The Wilhelm-Marx-Haus courtyard is quite hidden as it’s not on the main drag as you wander from market to market. The beautiful Christmas lights and tasteful decorations create a lovely, cosy atmosphere. While you’re mooching around the square, why not stop off at the ‘Sucos do Brasil’ Cocktail Bar and enjoy a nice cocktail, mulled wine or a beer?
Kö-Bogen/Jan-Wellem-Platz Christmas Market
The Kö-Bogen Christmas market has a 450m² ice rink where you’ll find around 20 stalls dotted around it – perfect for warming up afterwards with a hot chocolate or a mulled wine! Other stalls selling food and drink as well as craft stalls with their handmade products make for a perfect Christmas experience.
The DEG Winterwelt ice rink is open from 16th November 2018 – 27th January 2019. For more information go to ‘Ice rink Düsseldorf’.
Ice skating: Daily from 11am – 10pm
